Thought it about time I posted an entry regarding one of my biggest influences. John Black, at Magnet Studio. John was responsible for some amazing artwork and I think the first time drum and bass music really saw good design. Previous to this design in drum and bass on the whole had a real ravey almost cheesy feel, with little thought to layout or concept. The underground DIY sensibility was present in the artwork with bad layouts, cliched imagery and little attention to typography.

The designs done by John really bought a mature element to the releases, a sense of style and a really individual identity but also a consistency and a level of quality control. As an avid record buyer myself during that period I spent a lot of time analysing his designs. Years later I would find myself working for a very similar client base. His stuff still remains influential in my work, particularly the attention to layout which I see as a bench mark.

Anyway, here is what I consider to be the best designer drum and bass has ever seen.

Carnal Forge - Testify For My Victims CD

Some photos of one of the first CD albums I created. This was from 2006 for the Swedish metal band 'Carnal Forge'. The theme of the artwork was based around the band as children having been abducted by a psychopath. The front cover depicts a shadowy figure looming in a doorway and in the booklet we created a pretty gruesome setting, with old rotting wooden textures and blood smears, also including a missing children poster with the photos of the band as children on it.

Just finished work on State Of Mind's new Nil By Mouth album. It will be released as a digipack CD album. The concept came from the ideas of fashion and trends in music whereby music is created to conform to and fit people into boxes. Hence the lifeless zombie style figures all being fed music through their iPods. Despite the subject matter we didn't want to make it too dark and moody so made the music splash out as colours from the iPods creating quite a striking visual image. As with all art its open to interpretation!

Here is a sheet showing some ideas created for the Tantrum Record label logo. The face is drawing is taken from an image of a screaming toddler and then made to look demonic using a bit of good old pen and paper manipulation. In the end the client has chosen to go with the top design here.

These couple of pieces are the beginning of a series of artworks i am experimenting with. The idea is to create intricate repeating patterns and artworks that look beautiful from objects that wouldn't normally be seen that way. Its complete freedom of expression, something i don't get to do very often due to time and money constraints. This was not influenced by anything other than my own instincts and experimentation... Hopefully something good will come out of it at the other end. Watch this space!

New style of artwork here slightly for me. The artwork is the a front cover for the forthcoming Inside Info 'Bit Rhythm EP' release. The illustration is of a beautiful but slightly sinister 'cyber woman' coming into being on a digital screen. Think 80's movie Weird Science but with a dark edge. There were a few new techniques here which I am looking forward to using in the future. Especially the way I bought out the colour within the face and eyes.

Here is some artwork that was not used for a certain release. The label ended up going with a 'safer' idea. I couldn't let this go to waste, partly because of the time spent on it and partly because its a piece I actually like. I will be working on this and hopefully produce some final artwork from it that is good enough to print on a canvass and hopefully sell. Lets see what happens!

Here it is.. my first sleeve for Ram Records. I have been a fan of Ram Records' music for many years now so to actually get my own piece out on their highly thought of label is a real landmark for me. Not only that, the subject matter was close to my heart.. Black holes! I have a fascination with black holes and quantum physics so it was a match made in 'the heavens'! (so to speak). Real effort went into this and the image is made from numerous storm cloud images painstakingly put together to make it look like galaxies careering towards the nothingness of a black hole. It also has a kind of hand painted feel which I really like.

This is the latest development of Champion Sound flyer. Over the last year the designs have stuck to the same theme but have developed over the months to get to where it is at the moment. There is a lot to be said about sticking with a style and developing a look for something like a flyer.
